Cheetahs Looking Towards Playoffs
The Watford Cheetahs (5-3) host their penultimate game of the 2010 regular season on Sunday when they welcome the Milton Keynes Pathfinders (3-6).
The Pathfinders have emerged as a late season flourisher, having won their last 3 consecutive games. They will be looking not only to prove that their recent run of form is due to anything but luck but also to avenge a 28-8 loss to the Cheetahs in their opening game of the 2010 season. The game was more closely contested than the score line would suggest, and the Pathfinders have come a long way since April. The Pathfinders have never beaten the Cheetahs, though the sides did tie one game in 2008. The Pathfinders are out of playoff contention but this will matter little on Sunday as they will attempt to further their best finish to a season in their brief history since reforming.
The Cheetahs started the season in fine style, winning 3 consecutive away games. After their quick start, they faltered to a 3-3 record with the season in danger of slipping away. Since then, a combination of a return to winning ways and results elsewhere in the division going their way have given their season a second lease on life. In their most recent game, they emerged victorious over the previously undefeated Hampshire Thrashers in a thrilling come-from-behind 21-17 victory.
The Cheetahs must now win both of their remaining games if they are to finish 2nd in the division and qualify for the playoffs for the 1st time since 2005. They are fully aware of the Pathfinders' improvement since the beginning of the season and will not be taking them lightly. The side has been working hard in preparation for 2:30 on Sunday. Should they emerge victorious, the Cheetahs would not only move one step closer to the playoffs but also ensure their first winning season since 2004.
The excitement in the Cheetahs locker room is palpable as they prepare to do their utmost to earn postseason honours in the quest for a national championship, a game the team has reached 3 times but never won. Will they retain their unbeaten record against the Pathfinders? is 2010 their year for glory?
