The most annoying question random people ask

Postby brighty » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:26 pm

Alrighty, so following my return from the land of sheep (Wales), ive been left with the most annoying of questions floating about my mind after I got asked it at least 6 times by randoms. Surely American football is just for pussies, or people who are crap at rugby. I usually give the reasoningof padding being necessary and how much more dangerous it is, plus throw in a few tickets to the gun show(obviously) to show that need to be big-ish, but once I finish They don't seem convinced and then when I go to the bar and order my fruity cocktail the impact of the reasoning is pretty much severely weakened.therefore I put to u, wat is ure response to the questioned that must have been asked to u at least once? And also choice of cocktail? Plus I did see someone from Bangor muddogs, and laughed at him, probably not nice but worth it.
everyone else has a sig thing so thought i would get one too. there it was

Usually point out that "well, training is on Sunday and you will be able to borrow some kit. Come down, see how pussy it is"

Though the most annoying question I get asked is regarding work, and is either "are you the guy with the bats?" or "is it like pushing tin?"

No to both. Also - Die Hard 2 can't happen. As that's the 3rd most annoying one...

Cocktail - Long Island Ice Tea is quite nice, as is Lynchburg Lemonade. Though of course all the best cocktails are in The Hobbit, in Southampton. £4 for a pints worth, all based on Lord of the Rings characters. Ace.

Ultimately they ask this question because they want you to bite, try and avoid it but if that doesnt work try these:
1. Rugby is a contact sport - American Football is a collision sport
2. The pads are weapons
3. Helmet with steel face cage + shoulder pads + approx 230lbs of weight moving at high velocity towards a 5mm thick foam knee pad - you do the maths
4. In rugby a tackle is one-on-one, in american football its upto 11-on-1
5. In rugby you get to jog around if play is on the other side of the pitch, in american football every player is running full speed on every play
6. You only hit/get hit when you have the ball, for us everyone is fair game unless the ball is in the air
7. The year before padding was formally introduced into the nfl 3 people died on the pitch from hits
8. In his prime after the 1995 Rugby World Cup Jona Lomu was signed up for training camp by the Dallas Cowboys as a tailback, after two weeks he quit because he couldn't take being hit by 11 (most of whom are bigger than him).

I take issue with this one, as many people can bring someone down in rugby, so up to 15.

Also Lomu never went near the NFL, have read his autobiography think this would have been mentioned. He simply declined their offer to play.

I find the people that say these things are idiots, never argue with idiots - they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

A punch in the balls always settles an argument.

the 'o, its just fat guys touching each other'...i point to the combine stats of players....45reps of 100kg in a minute..that's not a pussies stats!!!...at which point, the 'o, thats professionals stats' come out..and again, it's back to square one....

'play rugby...proper sport' is always 'play american football and say that'..ends with them mentioning 'na, f*ck that you're all nutters'

if you have a look for Strong the movie, its about DeFrancos Gym, with a couple of rugby lads coming in gettin ruined on day 1...

- i've been told by a lot of people that american football is fat men just pushing each other around...which we all know it isn't. they're finely tuned athletes....
- the comparison of pro rugby players against amateur American Footballers has always happened in my experience ('o, well...jono lomu would run through 5 people...you couldnt stop him'...not many people could!)
- having asked a few of the rugby lads at Uni to come to a training session, they all replied 'no, f*ck that, you're all nutters...', and the abuse stopped after that
- Strong the Movie: a documentary about Joe DeFranco - he trains David Dehl, Brian Cushing, Miles Austin, and a load other pro-sports players, and college players too. Theres a preview here: http://www.defrancostraining.com/strong-the-movie.html

I always say to rugby players because thats who it usually is that if they were wearing the kit we wear would they tackle harder or different and the answer is usually yes. And most rugby players who have actually tried it come away with a bit more respect. Also when they say about the stopping and starting I point out that it is a game of chess with men and that every second of the 60 minute game is 100% full speed unlike other sports.

I like to point out that in 1907, the last year they played american football without protection, 17 players got killed in one college season. If that doesn't work, I usually take a glass and smash it in their face. Which, for your information Mr. Bright, should be filled with Jack Daniels and Coke, and no cocktail. Ill buy u one at the Mdx Su.

Scientifically proven that football players hit harder than rugby players:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7tGY-VDx3o

Although, to be fair they are comparing an NFL player to an american rugby player... That said, I'd imagine a safety or LB like Patrick Willis would hit much harder.
